But does swallowing collagen actually get collagen to your skin? The science is more interesting — and more nuanced — than the marketing suggests.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, making up about 70–80% of the dry weight of skin. It forms a fibrous network in the dermis (the skin's deeper layer) that provides structural support, firmness, and elasticity.
From our mid-20s onward, collagen production declines at roughly 1% per year. UV exposure, smoking, and high-sugar diets accelerate this. The visible result: skin that gradually becomes thinner, looser, and more prone to fine lines.
The Absorption Problem — and How Hydrolyzation Solves (Part of) It
Here's the core skepticism around collagen supplements: collagen molecules are far too large to be absorbed intact through the gut. Any collagen you eat is broken down by digestive enzymes into amino acids and small peptides — the same building blocks you'd get from eating chicken, fish, or eggs.
So why would a collagen supplement be any better than just eating protein?
The answer is hydrolyzation. Most collagen supplements use hydrolyzed collagen (collagen hydrolysate or collagen peptides) — collagen that's already been enzymatically broken down into smaller peptides, typically 2–10 amino acids long. These smaller peptides:
- Are absorbed more readily than intact protein
- Have been shown in tracer studies to survive digestion and appear in the bloodstream
- May signal fibroblasts (the cells that make collagen) to increase production
This third point is the key mechanism: it's not that the collagen peptides become skin collagen directly. Rather, they appear to act as signaling molecules that prompt the body to make more of its own collagen.
What the Clinical Studies Show
There is now a growing body of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on oral collagen peptides. The results are cautiously positive — not dramatic, but not placebo either.
Skin hydration: Multiple studies, including a 2014 study in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology (n=69, 8 weeks, 2.5g/day hydrolyzed collagen), found significant improvements in skin moisture compared to placebo. Hydration improvements seem to be one of the most consistent findings across studies.
Skin elasticity: A 2015 study in the same journal (n=114, 8 weeks, 2.5g or 5g/day) found improved skin elasticity in women over 35 taking collagen vs. placebo. The 2.5g and 5g doses showed similar results.
Wrinkle reduction: A 2014 RCT found a statistically significant reduction in eye wrinkle volume after 8 weeks of 2.5g/day collagen hydrolysate. The absolute numbers were modest — about 20% improvement on measurement scales.
Dermal density: Some imaging studies using ultrasound have shown increased dermal thickness after consistent supplementation over 3–6 months.
What's missing: Many studies have been industry-funded (by collagen supplement manufacturers), which introduces bias risk. Sample sizes tend to be small (50–150 participants). Long-term studies beyond 12 months are rare. There's also significant variability in the peptide formulations used — not all hydrolyzed collagen is the same.
Types of Collagen Supplements
- Type I collagen — the primary type in skin, also in bones and tendons. Found in bovine (cow hide) and marine (fish skin) sources. Most relevant for skin benefits.
- Type II collagen — primarily in cartilage. More relevant for joint health than skin.
- Type III collagen — found alongside Type I in skin and blood vessels. Also relevant for skin.
Marine collagen (from fish skin) is predominantly Type I and is absorbed slightly faster than bovine sources due to smaller peptide size. It's also more expensive. For skin-specific goals, marine or bovine Type I collagen hydrolysate is the evidence-backed choice.
Vegan "collagen" doesn't exist as an ingredient — collagen is only found in animals. What's marketed as vegan collagen is actually a vitamin C and amino acid blend designed to support the body's own collagen synthesis, which is a different (and still valid) approach.
Effective Dose and Timeline
Based on the studies, 2.5–10g per day of hydrolyzed collagen peptides appears to be the active dose range. Most studies showing results use 2.5–5g. More isn't necessarily better beyond 10g — the benefits plateau.
Timeline expectations:
- 4–8 weeks: Some hydration and early elasticity improvements
- 3–6 months: More meaningful structural changes (dermal density, wrinkle reduction)
- Ongoing: Benefits appear to require continued supplementation — they're not permanent if you stop
What Collagen Supplements Can't Replace
Sunscreen. Full stop. No supplement addresses the primary cause of collagen breakdown — UV exposure — as effectively as daily broad-spectrum SPF. Vitamin C topically applied directly stimulates collagen synthesis and protects existing collagen via antioxidant action. Retinoids remain the most clinically validated topical ingredient for increasing dermal collagen production.
Oral collagen works best as a complement to a solid topical skincare routine, not a substitute for it.
Cofactors That Matter
Collagen synthesis in the body requires vitamin C as an essential cofactor. Without adequate vitamin C, collagen cross-linking can't occur properly (this is, historically, what causes scurvy). Many collagen supplements include vitamin C for this reason — and if yours doesn't, ensure your diet provides it.
The Bottom Line
The evidence for hydrolyzed collagen peptide supplements is better than the cynical view ("it's just protein") and less definitive than the marketing implies. The mechanism is plausible and increasingly supported by well-designed trials. Improvements in skin hydration and elasticity are real but modest, and they take months, not weeks.
If you're going to try collagen supplementation, choose a hydrolyzed Type I collagen (bovine or marine), aim for 2.5–5g daily, pair it with adequate vitamin C, and maintain realistic expectations: subtle improvements in skin quality over several months, not dramatic rejuvenation.
It's not magic. But for some people, it's genuinely useful — and the evidence is strong enough to justify trying it.
